Frequently Asked Questions
What age can join Boy Scouts?
The age group is from 11 (or 10 years old and have completed 5th grade) to 18 years old or 6th to 12th grade.
When is it too late to join?
Typically, anytime in middle school is the best time to get started in Boy Scouts. Boys can participate in the Boy Scout troop until they turn eighteen; they can join at any point up until that point, but if they don't join until high school, they will not have time to reach the highest ranks (such as Eagle).
How much does Cub Scouts cost?
Troop 268 charges dues annually - about $100; you will need to acquire some uniform and equipment. Monthly campouts usually cost $15 to $30, depending on the activity. If they go to summer camp the cost is around $325 for a week, although the Scouts have an opportunity to do fundraising to defray some of the cost.
Do I have to join a particular Boy Scout Troop based on our school?
No! There are several other Boy Scout troops nearby in Dunwoody and Brookhaven, and they can join whichever one is most convenient to their schedule and best matches their desired program. You can locate other Scout troops at http://beascout.org.
I've read that Boy Scouts are now accepting girls - how does that affect Troop 268?
Beginning in February 2019, Boy Scout troops are allowed to begin accepting girls (and will be referred to nationally as 'Scouts BSA'; however, due to the strength of the Girl Scouts program in the Chamblee/Brookhaven area, Troop 268 is seeing limited demand at this time. There is a troop nearby (in Dunwoody) that will be accepting girls; if your daughter is interested in the Boy Scouts program, please e-mail us at
Alternatively, please consider getting involved in a local Girl Scouts troop - see our Girl Scouts webpage for more information.
Are there fundraising requirements?
Troop 268 chooses to not do extensive fundraising, but instead requires fees based on participation in individual activities. However, we do participate in the annual camp card sales which allows Scouts to raise money for a significant part of their summer camp cost.
How often does Troop 268 go camping?
Do parents need to participate?
In Boy Scouts, the Scouts are supposed to plan their own activities, but we always need adult leadership from parents - parents can drive to and join on campouts; serve on the troop committee; help the boys organize activities and help with merit badges that match their interests or experience. The Scout troop can be a great opportunity to spend time with your son as he matures into an adult.
What is the relationship between Troop 268 and Chamblee Methodist - does my child have to be a church member to Join?
Boy Scouts is open to all families, regardless of Church membership or faith. Chamblee Methodist is the chartered organization supporting Pack 268, and we do request (but not require) Scouts to attend the annual Scout Sunday service to be recognized by the church.
